IELTS on Computer in India 2026: What Students Need to Know Before Booking the Test
Updated: 28 September 2026
Before you pay for IELTS, there are three decisions worth getting right: which test your university requires, which delivery option suits you, and when your results need to arrive. Choosing the earliest available slot without checking these details can create avoidable problems for your study-abroad application.
IELTS on Computer in India in 2026 also comes with a significant change: the traditional paper-based test has been discontinued, while a new Writing on Paper option allows candidates to handwrite the Writing component where offered. This guide explains the current options, fees and booking checks so you can choose with confidence.
What Has Changed for IELTS in India in 2026?
The IELTS partners announced a move away from traditional paper-based testing from mid-2026, with implementation dates varying by market. IDP IELTS India now displays a notice that IELTS on Paper has been discontinued. See the official IELTS delivery update and IDP India FAQs.
IDP lists 1 September 2026 as the introduction date for IELTS Writing on Paper in India. Listening and Reading remain computer-based; the Writing answers can be handwritten under this option. Check availability for your chosen city, test type and date.
What Is IELTS on Computer?
IELTS on Computer is taken at an official test centre. You enter your Listening, Reading and Writing answers on a computer. Speaking remains an interview with a trained human examiner; follow your centre’s instructions for the interview arrangements.
It is also different from IELTS Online, which is a separate remote-testing product. Booking a computer test does not mean taking the exam on your own laptop at home. The official delivery guide explains the distinction.
According to IDP’s computer-test FAQs, the content, question types, scoring and difficulty remain equivalent to the paper format. A computer does not automatically make a higher band score easier to achieve.
Choose the Right IELTS Test Before Choosing a Date
“Computer” describes the delivery method. You still need to select the correct test for your purpose.
- IELTS Academic: Generally intended for higher education and certain professional registration purposes.
- IELTS General Training: Used for purposes including migration and study or training below degree level.
- IELTS for UKVI: Choose the appropriate approved test when your specific UK application requires it.
Use the official IELTS test-type guide, then check your university’s instructions and the applicable visa requirements. A UK study plan alone is not enough information to decide which test to book.
Record the required overall band and minimum scores for individual skills. For example, if an offer specifies both an overall score and a Writing minimum, meeting only the overall requirement may leave the condition unmet.
IELTS on Computer Fees in India in 2026
At the time of checking, IDP publishes the following fees:
| Test | Published fee |
|---|---|
| IELTS on Computer — Academic or General Training | ₹19,000 |
| IELTS on Computer for UKVI | ₹19,250 |
Check the IDP India fee page and the final booking screen before payment. Rescheduling, a retake or a score review may involve separate charges, so do not assume they are included in the original test fee.
How Quickly Will You Receive Your Results?
IELTS’s general delivery guidance lists 1–5 days after completion for IELTS on Computer results. Some official pages advertise faster typical turnaround, but students should not treat the shortest advertised time as a guaranteed deadline.
Work backwards from the date your university needs the score. Allow time for result release, submission and any processing by the receiving institution. Avoid booking immediately before a deadline based on the assumption that your result will arrive the next day.
Passport and Booking Requirements to Check
IDP India requires an original, valid passport on test day. Use the passport details required during registration and bring the same document to the test. Check the official registration instructions before submitting your application.
- Check your name, date of birth and passport number carefully.
- Make sure your passport will remain valid for the test date.
- Use an email address and mobile number you can access regularly.
- Confirm the test centre address and reporting time.
- Read the Speaking appointment details instead of assuming its timing.
- Contact the provider before booking if you need access arrangements.
If you are renewing or replacing your passport, ask IDP how to handle the document change before you complete your booking.
How to Book IELTS on Computer in India
- Confirm your requirements. Check the test type, band scores and submission deadline for your intended application.
- Use the official IDP India booking platform. Choose the appropriate test product and module.
- Select your city and available session. Review any Writing delivery options offered for that booking.
- Enter your details. Match the required information to your passport and complete the requested document steps.
- Review the terms and total fee. Check the transfer and cancellation conditions before paying.
- Save your confirmation. Review subsequent messages for venue, reporting and Speaking details.
Available sessions change as places are booked. Use the live booking calendar rather than an old screenshot, social media post or generic date list.
Can You Retake Just One IELTS Skill?
IELTS One Skill Retake allows eligible candidates to retake Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking without repeating the other three skills.
You must meet the eligibility conditions, use a participating centre and complete the retake within 60 days of your original test. Only one One Skill Retake is permitted per original full test. For Writing on Paper, IELTS specifies that the retake must follow the original delivery mode.
Before relying on this option, confirm that your university and any relevant receiving authority accept it. Availability does not mean universal acceptance, and a retake should remain a backup rather than your preparation strategy.
How to Prepare for the Computer Test
Practising English and practising the test interface solve different problems. Give yourself time for both before deciding that you are ready.
- Practise with a keyboard. Complete timed writing tasks using the delivery method you intend to book.
- Read longer passages on screen. Notice whether scrolling or switching between questions affects your concentration.
- Use official familiarisation materials. Learn how the interface works before exam day.
- Review accuracy. Look for repeated spelling errors, missed instructions and incomplete answers.
- Practise speaking aloud. Work on answering the question clearly and developing your ideas naturally.
Start with official IELTS sample questions. Use your practice results to identify what needs work instead of selecting a date purely because a slot is available.
Common Mistakes to Avoid Before Booking
- Confusing IELTS Academic with General Training.
- Assuming Writing on Paper means every section is paper-based.
- Expecting a guaranteed next-day result.
- Ignoring a university’s individual skill requirements.
- Planning around One Skill Retake without checking acceptance.
- Paying before reading the applicable cancellation and transfer terms.
Read the current IDP India transfer and cancellation policy for your specific booking. Do not assume that a date change is free or that every cancellation receives a full refund.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IELTS on Computer easier than IELTS on Paper?
The delivery method does not change the intended difficulty or scoring standard. Your comfort with typing, screen reading and the interface can affect your experience, so practise the format before booking.
Can I still handwrite my IELTS Writing answers in India?
IDP introduced Writing on Paper from 1 September 2026. Check whether it is offered for your selected test; it does not bring back the traditional fully paper-based exam.
Is the Speaking test marked by a computer?
No. Speaking involves a trained human examiner. Follow your test centre’s confirmation for the interview arrangements.
Can I take IELTS on Computer from home?
No. IELTS on Computer is a test-centre product. IELTS Online is a separate option with its own availability and acceptance conditions.
