The True Cost of Studying in the UK In recent years, the cost of studying in the UK has increased significantly. Navigating Financial Proof Requirements for UK Student Visa Applications: 8Essential Tips to Meet the Criteria

Rumours or Reality: Is the UK Graduate Visa Being Shortened to 18 Months? Understanding the Current Graduate Route Policy (2025) As of 2025, the UK’s Graduate Route Visa allows international students to remain in the country for: 2 years after completing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree 3 years after completing a PhD This post-study work option gives students the chance to gain professional experience, explore job opportunities, and even transition into long-term work visas like the Skilled Worker visa. It has been especially popular among Indian, Nigerian, and Chinese students, contributing to the UK’s reputation as a top global education destination. Where Did the Rumour Come From? The speculation about a shorter stay period—reducing the Graduate Route from 2 years to 18 months—started to intensify in May 2025 with the release of the UK government’s white paper on immigration titled “Restoring Control over the Immigration System.” Several think tanks like Policy Exchange recommended tighter regulations, arguing the Graduate Route was being misused as a “backdoor” to migration. Prominent newspapers such as The Times, Financial Times, and The Telegraph echoed these reports, sparking uncertainty among current and prospective students. Has the UK Government Made It Official? No—at least not yet. While the Home Office and UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) have acknowledged the proposal to reduce the visa to 18 months, no official legal change has been implemented as of July 2025. This means: All current and incoming students remain eligible for the existing 2- or 3-year stay. No formal Statement of Changes to Immigration Rules has been issued. Still, the policy review is ongoing, and the proposed change remains under consideration for possible implementation in the 2026 academic cycle or later. Why Might the UK Shorten the Graduate Visa? The key drivers behind the proposed changes are: Political Pressure: Reducing net migration is a top government priority. Public Sentiment: Concerns over housing, jobs, and strain on public services. Education as a Migration Pathway: Allegations that students use the Graduate Route to stay without genuine academic intent. Potential Impact on International Students: If the Graduate Route is shortened to 18 months, here is how it might affect you: Area of Impact Potential Effect Job Search Timeline Less time to find skilled employment Visa Transition A shorter stay may pressure students to switch to the Skilled Worker Visa sooner Long-Term Plans May delay eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) Return on Investment Reduced ability to gain ROI on UK education through work experience Students from India and other high-applicant countries could be disproportionately impacted, as they often rely on the Graduate Route time to transition into the UK job market. Alternatives & Practical Advice While the policy is still under review, students can prepare in advance: Consider Alternatives: Skilled Worker Visa: Apply for jobs with UK-based licensed sponsors. Start-up or Innovator Founder Visa: For those planning to launch businesses. Global Talent Visa: For exceptional achievers in academia or research. Tips for Students: Start job hunting early—even during your final semester. Use your university career services and alumni networks. Internships or part-time jobs during your studies can increase your chances of staying. Conclusion: Keep Calm and Monitor Updates: While the rumour has a policy basis, no formal reduction to 18 months has been confirmed. If you’re a student or planning to study in the UK soon: You’re still eligible for the 2-year (or 3-year) Graduate Route. Stay updated via UKVI and your university’s international office. Be proactive about your post-study career planning. Final Thought: Until changes are formally enacted, “Keep calm and carry on planning—but with one eye on the policy news.” Conclusion: Stay Informed with Focus Education While the UK government has proposed reducing the Graduate Route from 2 years to 18 months, no official change has been implemented yet. As of now, international students can still benefit from the current post-study work visa terms. At Focus Education, we understand that such policy shifts can create confusion and concern. In this blog, we explore why one-year master’s degrees are booming, how the UK Graduate Route visa 2025 supports this trend, and why now is the perfect time to study in the UK. Why One-Year Master’s Programs Are Growing in Popularity: Traditionally, master’s degrees around the world span two years. However, one-year master’s programs in the UK are fast outpacing their longer counterparts. Here’s why students are making the switch: 1. Time Efficiency Students can complete a full master’s degree in just 12 months. This is ideal for career switchers, working professionals, and recent graduates who want to upskill quickly without spending extra time away from the workforce. 2. Cost-Effective Education A shorter program means lower tuition fees and reduced living expenses. Studying in the UK has become more affordable than studying in countries like the USA or Australia, where courses often take longer to complete. 3. No Sponsorship Needed: Unlike many traditional work visas, the Graduate Route does not require employer sponsorship. Graduates can explore various career options without the pressure of securing a job offer beforehand. 7. Work Flexibility Students are free to work in any sector or role, giving them the flexibility to gain work experience across industries, build networks, and discover their career paths. Impact of Visa Rules on International Students

Impact of Visa Rules on International Students The United Kingdom continues to be a top destination for Indian students pursuing higher education. With its globally ranked universities and strong post-study work options, the UK offers immense appeal. However, significant visa policy changes introduced in 2024 and rolling into 2025 are starting to reshape how students plan their study abroad journey. From tighter financial requirements to restrictions on bringing family members, students must now navigate a more complex system. In this article, we will explore what these changes mean, how they affect aspiring Indian students, and how expert guidance from Focus Education Pvt. Ltd. can help you stay prepared. 1. Higher Financial Requirements: What You Now Need to Show One of the most impactful changes is the increase in the financial maintenance requirement—a key part of the UK student visa process. As of 2024, students were required to show: £1,334 per month for 9 months (total: £12,006) if studying in London £1,023 per month for 9 months (total: £9,207) if studying outside London Update (2025): From early 2025, these figures are being revised to: £1,483 per month for 9 months (total: £13,347) if studying in London £1,136 per month for 9 months (total: £10,224) if studying outside London This represents a significant increase compared to the previous years. Students must now ensure they have funds readily available in their accounts for at least 28 consecutive days before applying for their visa. For many middle-class families in India, this increased requirement is a real financial stretch, making early financial planning more crucial than ever. 2. Dependent Visa Restrictions: Who Can You Bring with You? Previously, international students studying postgraduate courses could bring their dependents (spouse and children) to the UK under the Student Dependent Visa category. However, as of January 2024, this changed significantly: Only students enrolled in research-based postgraduate programs (e.g., PhDs, MPhils) can bring dependents. Students pursuing taught postgraduate courses are no longer eligible to bring family members. 3. Post-Study Work Rights: The Graduate Route Remains Despite the tougher entry requirements, the Graduate Route visa still allows international students to remain in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD holders) after completing their course. This route gives graduates the opportunity to gain work experience, apply for jobs, and even transition into long-term skilled worker visas if they meet the requirements. However, ongoing government reviews may impact this route in the future, especially for low-demand fields or institutions. Students are encouraged to choose courses in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, data science, and engineering to improve their prospects. 4. Tighter Documentation and Visa Scrutiny With stricter rules now in place, students must ensure all documentation is flawless. Recent rejections have increased due to: Incorrect or incomplete bank statements Funds not being held for the full 28-day period Unverified education or documentation discrepancies Processing times have also become slower during peak seasons, so it’s advisable to start applications at least 3-4 months in advance of your course start date. 5. How Focus Education Pvt. Ltd. Can Support You Navigating the new UK student visa requirements can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. At Focus Education Pvt. Ltd., we offer: Personalised university and course selection advice. Latest visa rule updates and documentation checklists. Financial planning and scholarship guidance. UK STUDENT VISA: TRANSITION FROM BRP CARDS TO E-

UK STUDENT VISA: TRANSITION FROM BRP CARDS TO E- VISAS AND CHANGES IN LIVING EXPENSES The UK continues to be a top destination for international students, offering world-class education and vibrant cultural experiences. However, keeping up with changing requirements is essential for a successful study-abroad journey. The UK government has moved toward a fully digital visa system, which means that after 31 st December 2024, the traditional Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards will be replaced by electronic visas (e-Visas). Alongside this, changes in the cost of living in the UK will also impact your budget. Here is everything you need to know about these transitions. If you are an international student planning to study in the UK, there are some key changes you need to be aware of regarding your visa status and living expenses. What is a BRP Card? The BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) card is a physical document issued to international students who are granted a visa for six months or more. The card serves as proof of your identity, right to stay, and ability to work or study in the UK. It includes personal details like your name, age, and biometric information (e.g., a photo and fingerprints). As of 31st December 2024, all BRP cards will expire, even if your visa is still valid. This change is part of a larger plan by the UK government to replace physical immigration documents with e-Visas by the end of 2025. The Transition to eVisas The UK government is transitioning to a fully digital visa system, and by 2025, physical BRP cards will no longer be issued to visa holders, including students. The eVisa will function as a digital version of the BRP card and will be linked to your passport. It will contain the same information about your immigration status, visa duration, and work/study rights, but will be accessed and managed online through your UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account. Why Did BRP Cards Expire in December 2024? If you hold a UK student visa, you may have noticed that your BRP card expired on 31st December 2024, even if your visa extends beyond this date. This is part of the UK’s plan to phase out BRP cards in favour of the eVisa system. The expiration date does not affect the validity of your visa; it simply means you will no longer use a physical BRP card to prove your right to stay and work in the UK. What is an eVisa? An eVisa is an electronic visa that replaces the BRP card. Once you transition to an eVisa, all your visa information will be stored online in your UKVI account. You can access it any time, and it will be used for verifying your immigration status when needed, such as when you are renting a property or applying for a job. The eVisa is linked to your passport, so there is no need to carry a physical card around with you. This move aims to simplify visa management, reduce administrative overhead, and improve border security. Does This Affect My Visa Duration? No, your visa duration remains the same. The change is purely administrative and relates only to how your immigration status is documented. The expiration of the BRP card does not affect your right to stay in the UK, work, or study. What Happens if I Don’t Apply for an eVisa? If you don’t transition to an eVisa by 31st December 2024, you will no longer have a valid document proving your immigration status in the UK. This could lead to complications when dealing with employers, landlords, or border control officers. Changes in Living Expenses for International Students While the transition from BRP cards to eVisas may be the most instant change affecting your visa status, international students should also prepare for fluctuations in living expenses in the UK. The cost of living has been rising, and these changes could impact your overall budget during your studies. Here is a breakdown of what to expect in terms of living costs: For students studying outside London: £1,136 per month, For students studying in Inner London: £1,483 per month. 1. Housing Costs Rent is typically the largest expense for international students in the UK. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in London is around £1,200 to £1,700. Outside of London, rents can range from £800 to £1,200, depending on the city or region. Some universities offer on-campus accommodation, which can be more affordable, but you will need to apply early, as these are often in high demand. 2. Utilities and Bills Utility bills (gas, electricity, water, and council tax) in the UK have been rising. On average, students can expect to pay approximately. £150 to £250 per month for utilities, depending on their usage and location. If you live in university-provided accommodation, some utilities may be included in the rent. 3. Food and Groceries The cost of groceries has increased due to inflation. A monthly grocery bill for a single person can range between £150 and £250, depending on your eating habits and where you shop. Budget supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi are great places to save money, and cooking your own meals is often cheaper than eating out. 4. Transportation Public transport in the UK, especially in cities like London, can be expensive. A monthly travel card in London can cost upwards of £150, while transport costs in smaller cities may be less. Many students use student discounts to save on transport, and some universities offer discounted or free bus passes. 5. Health Insurance and NHS Surcharge As an international student, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa application, which gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). The cost of private health insurance, if you choose to take it, can range from approximately. £50 to £100 per month. 6. Other Expenses Don’t forget to budget for personal expenses, entertainment, and study materials. These costs can vary widely
